History of gaming
The first video game ever released was Pong in October 1958 by Physicist WilliamHiginbotham; an easy and simple tennis game. It surely expanded the horizons of gaming ambitions. Through the 80’s till the early 90’s, games were all about “hack and slash”, gamers used their free time to relieve their accumulated stress by mashing buttons. I personally think that “gamers” term didn’t originate until the dawn of the new century since people didn’t spend a huge deal of their time. At early 2000s, games started to emerge with real-emerging stories, with vivid and unforgettable characters, in this article, we are going to focus on an example of the gaming universe which is the ever-growing franchise “Assassins’ Creed”. We will split the article into chronological timelines.
Assassins’ creed (2007-2011):
At that time, I felt that Altair’s
gameplay is an upgraded continuation of the Prince of Persia series as they
were both made by Ubisoft, but I was proved wrong. It brought new huge elements
to the gaming world such as the detection meter and the unique parkouring.
Surely at that time it was an underdeveloped concept, but itshowed off the
potential of future open world games, and the start of a loved franchise. Two
years later, Assassin’s Creed 2 was released, and it had undergone huge
upgrades, brought a new charismatic character “Ezio”, its soundtracks are
nostalgic and emits the aura of a respected and well-done game. It also gave us
some side story missions to keep the fun rolling. Brotherhood followed one year
later, and I think it is the prime of the franchise, the Renaissance Rome and
its architecture, the nostalgic feeling you get of the old past. The DaVinci
missions, and its somehow accurate story-telling of the history. Revelations
came to tell the story of the old and wise Ezio, sure it was not action-packed
as its predecessor, but it showed much wisdom and emotional moments. The
trilogy has been an immersive journey telling the story of the Italian assassin
Ezio from his youth to his old age.
Assassin’s Creed (2012-2014):
Some new games do pour you into the
game’s universe and get you attached to the protagonist, that what I think
Ubisoft failed when making Assassins’ creed 3, sure it was a nice break and a
dip into a new environment with a better parkour and smoother graphics. You
spend almost half of the game playing as the templar Haytham, and we didn’t get
enough time to see how Conor developed. Truth be said the combat in this game
is on par with the newly-released Valhalla. Black flag came as a fresh start
for the series. We see yet another charismatic character “Edward” he who was an
ambitious pirate who went destroying ships and looking in the depths for riches,
and how he ended up amazed by the universe of the templars and assassins. This
game showed new possibilities for the franchise to begin with, but combat was a
bit disappointing. Ubisoft went with its ambitions to the next level with
Unity. I personally think unity is the best-looking game in the series with the
most fun parkour despite its buggy launch. I think it was because of the
release of the newly-made PS4 and XBOX ONE, so it wanted to show off its vast
abilities. Syndicate marked the death of the original Assassin’s Creed since
Unity has put bad taste on people’s tongues, Ubisoft had taken a 2-year break
since 2009.
Assassins’ Creed (2017-2020)
Witcher 3 got released in 2015 and
made a huge success, so Ubisoft had to change the rules, and started focusing
in the never-ending gameplay hours of the RPG world. It still had some of the
old Assassins’ vibes with Origins. When Odyssey came, it was closer to a Greek
game than being a continuation of the series. It had good combat and very
impressive graphics, but the “?” felt like a chore and it was very repetitive.
But the romance was a bit of a refreshment. Valhalla came to improve what
Odyssey had failed to do. Its combat is legendary. But again, it didn’t feel
like an Assassin’s creed game. It was easier to slap the name of the notorious
game than to create a whole new series.
Finally, I can’t complain about this
series, it brought to me much joy and happiness, it was a journey full of ups
and downs. Let’s see what will the next installment of the series brings to the
table.
